Hey everyone I am new to the boating world. Just got a 16' Bayliner and it has a 50hp Force motor on it. I have not put it in the water yet because the motor is not starting. I can turn the key and it will try and start but will not turn over. I talked with some guys and they said that it could be the stator or coil pack. It had a Comp test done cant remember what psi they got but said that was good and I am getting fuel to the top of the engine. Does anyone else have another direction to go if its not the stator or coil pack?

Thanks

Sounds like you don't have enough power going to the starter. Try fully charging the battery, cleaning the cable ends, and any corrosion you may see.

If your getting good spark to each cylinder then stater and cd cdi is fine. If however the battery is low or bad then either replace or charge your battery. Check, clean and tighten all connections.
Do a spark test on each cylinder and just to be safe I would do a comp. test anyways. Good comp
Is key and very important. Let us know what you find out.

The battery is new. We just tried to get spark and there is none. We are about to test the stator and i hope thats whats doing it. I did have one question though, does the stator supply all of the power to the coil packs and the rest of the engine. I took a test light and i am not getting any power to the coils. So I wasnt sure if that may be the stator is bad and not supplying the proper power to the coils?

In your first post you stated that the motor will try to start but wont turn over. Does this mean your getting a clicking sound or starter is engaging but not spinning the flywheel, or is it turning over but the motor wont fire up and run. Stator is your alternator and only supplies power while the motor is running. To get things started from the beginning a good battery is needed and you have that.

Alright i got it started. looks like the coils did not have power going to them. now i have a new issue the motors not pissing. i have cleaned all of the lines and its still not doing anything. I was told to pull the foot and check the impeller. So thats the next job that needs to be done.

I just came across a wire that goes to the top of the engine i was told it was the temp switch. Well its broken and cant find anything online to buy a temp switch. does anyone know if that is what it is called?

Temp or overheat sensor. Has a single wire running to it. Try boats.net. you might find one on ebay to. No water flowing out the exhaust relief holes is a good sign of a bad impeller. Could be other things but most likely its the impeller. Wont know until you get the lower off and see what you find. Before I forget the temp or overheat sensor has nothing to do with water flow. Its sole purpose is to alarm you in the event your motor is overheating. You probably already new that but just in case I thought it best to tell you. After all that's what these forums are for.

Impellers are a seasonal maintenance item. You need to spend the $16 or so bucks before every season, and install a new one.. Period. Once you learn how, the process becomes easier in the following years. Doing this regular maintenance will insure that you will always have proper cooling. Now if your overheat sensor is broken you can either replace it, or install a telltale so you can see the engine is pumping water. If the motor is not stock to the boat, or the boat is older it may not even have an alarm buzzer.

One more tip. If yours don't have one you can put a tell tale on it(pee hole). Should have a plug on the top of the head, take it out got to a parts house get a 90deg. fitting. I think it's a 1/4in. npt with an 1/8in. hose bib but take the plug with you. get some hose and run it out the housing like normal outboards so you'll know if it's pumping or not.
