Re: 1986 75hp Mariner 4 cylinder

I just purchased a used boat with a 1986 Mariner 4cyl 2stroke. I changed the impeller and all went well until I tried to get the lower unit back in. It stops solid with about a 1" gap between the machined surfaces of the upper and lower units. I've tried every trick to ensure things are aligned but I can't budge the LU closer than the 1" gap. Any one solve a similar problem?

I have a 86ish 75hp Mariner 4 cy as well. It had been seatting for 7 years and it fired right up. I had to change the impeller on it and that s it.
melhxi:You may have to wiggle the prop to get the spline on the drive shaft to engage.good luck

Yo! I have a 91 Mariner 100HP. I understand they are pretty closely related. I'm in the process of installing a new impeller and kit. I just got it with a PrinceCraft I bought.

Re: 1986 75hp Mariner 4 cylinder

Hello All,

I have a 1986 Mariner 75Hp and have just encountered a problem recently; the mortor has always ran great and then one day I went to start it and it took the choke to get it started (after it was warm already) and high throttle to keep it running. It will not idle and when I go to put it into gear real fast it dies. Any thoughts? It does not smoke but very little which is not the norm. It has a oil injection poly bottle in the battery compartment but I think it's mixing ok. I was told to cut that thing loose and mix directly into the fuel tank. can you confirm this?

Thanks,

Jim

I have same engine. Did away with oil injection. Just mix fuel myself. No issues. But after sitting for a long time. It ran fine on rabbit ears for a couple months. Took out on the water. It ran fine under load for a short time, then stalled. And would barely start and idle. Took home cleaned carbs, found I wasn’t getting fuel to carbs. In process of rebuilding fuel pump now. Will update how that works. But anyone have any suggestions if that doesn’t work? Getting spark on all four cylinders. Thanks

Unneeded so-called discussion group when the OP never responds in 10 years. And leaves the forum!
