1986 85HP Wiring Harness

Greetings,

A friend of mine has a 1986 Mercury 85 HP that is in need of an engine harness as several wires have become brittle. The serial number is 7071502 but I can't seem to reference that anywhere. Does anyone know of another serial number that may be a match? Will any 1986 85HP Merc harness work? The wires that are particularily bad are the coil pack wires. So far I have looked on the www.boats.net site and see many 707xxxx series numbers just not the one I need. Any help would be much appreciated!

Crowleymarine.com does not show Merc made an 85HP motor in '86. Could it be a Canadian 1976 model? That serial number could match.

Does the motor have the big quick electrical disconnect plug on the starboard side? The Coil pack harnesses are NLA for that motor. It sounds like you need to make them up. They look to be simple ring terminals on wires. So make them up to match the original and tape them together to keep them neat.

On the boats.net site they have a Mercury Outboard catalog and a Mercury Mariner catalog. The Mercury Mariner catalog has 707xxxx series serial numbers just not the right match. I don't know off hand about the bulk connector you mention, but if it is just a matter of a set of wires with ring terminals then I'll sooner make them up then go through the trouble of ordering anyway.
