My engine 1986 Evinrude 90HP has always started up easily and ran beautifully every year 1986 thru 1998. Then I fell ill and could only start the engine on my driveway annually with hose and cups on the waterjacket. It started up easily and would idle nicely Now that I have recovered (2003) we took the boat to the water again. It started up fine but when pushed the throttle forward the engine fails. I will change the old gas out but is there anything else I should do? (I changed the plugs).

Re: 1986 90hp Evinrude Power Loss

Ray.... When a engine sits for any length of time, the carburetors foul, clog, and gum up, especially within the high speed jets.

The high speed jets are located (2 in each carb), within each side of the carburetors, at the bottom center of the float chamber. They are accessable by removing the screw that you see at the bottom sides of the float chamber.

Occasionally one can clean the jets while they are still in the carburetor by removing those screws and manually cleaning the jets with a solid single strand piece of mechanics wire (worth a try just in case one doesn't feel like taking two carburetors apart at the moment).

Good luck with the engine and with your health.
