How is everyone? I just traded my 1989 Yamaha Radian xy600 for a 1986 Bayliner Capri 16 footer with an 85 HP Force. I have never owned a boat so I dont know anything about them. I am planning to re-do everything and make it look more modern. I am looking for horsepower as well and really dont know what size outboard I can put on it. Are there any outboards out there that are pushing more horses with a close weight match? Are there any upgrades you can add to the old force and give it a boost? I appreciate it everyone

Re: 1986 Bayliner Capri 16' 85 Force

Welcome to iboats!

You are already at the maximum rated horsepower for your hull. Although your Force is putting out fewer than the full 85 at the prop (I believe they still rated them at the powerhead at that time), it is lighter than other 85s. Your best bet is to ensure as many of the ponies that were there new are still present and accounted for. This means ensuring compression is good, the carbs are clean and properly adjusted, and the ignition system is in good shape (proper, clean spark plugs, ignition advance working correctly). Make visit to the Force & Chrysler Outboards forum area for help. The gurus there may be able to offer you some tips to eek out a few more HP.

Oh, yeah, and pictures are always appreciated!
