1986 Bayliner Help....

I am trying to buy a Bayliner with a volvo penta 2.3ltr engine. The engine does overheat after 10-15 minutes. When I put the motor in gear for forward the prop goes back and forth and sometimes does not engage. The same with reverse. Is it possable for me to take the lower and upper unit apart and replace any worn or broken gears/pieces. Would this be a hard project to do and would this help with the overheating problem??

I don't think I'd start out with something that already has problems, and older boats often have rotted wood somewhere (floor, transom,stringers). Fixing an outdrive is a job for a professional with special tools. Do yourself a favor and find something newer that functions properly and does not have rot!! Older Bayliners,esp ones that were not cared for are known for that. Really, any older boat if not cared for (covered when not in use) can have a LOT of rot in it, and it is very labor intensive to fix.

Hi, Rob.<br /><br />From reading your description of the troubles I gather that you have little experience with boats and with I/O power.<br /><br />The answer is, yes, could do those things, but I strongly recommend that you don't buy this boat.<br /><br />Being a Bayliner and being obviously poorly maintained and in bad condition there are likely to be a lifetime of other troubles with it that you haven't noticed yet.<br /><br />That boat sounds like a project for an experienced and masochistic person with unlimited time and bux to invest.<br /><br />Good luck.
