My boat had a old 80s 150 Evinrude on it originally, now I'm going to mount a 1980 50 HP Mercury. The steering wheel and piston steering drive assy. that are on the boat work really smooth. Do I buy some kind of kit that allows me to connect to the Mercury? The existing steering cables have 2 moving rods at the back of the boat, the Mercury is only using 1 right now. Thanks for any guidance here.

A 50HP motor only need one cable. I assume your steering kit is dual cables. There is a "Z" shaped rod that connects the steering cable end to the motor. The rod will have a joint like a ball joint to allow proper movement. The rod screws into the Mercury steering arm and a jam nut is installed as well. The other end has a nylon locknut and a tight fit into the steering cable end.
