At the end of the throttle arm is the kill button. Around it is a sort of dial that will rotate both directions. Anyone know the purpose of this or what it is called? Also I need to install a lanyard type kill switch on this motor, what is the best way to do so?

Yes it is the idle speed adjustment ( more of a throttle stop really). Needs quite a bit of twiddling to make much difference.

Maybe, just maybe, a kill switch with lanyard from a later model will fit in place of the existing one otherwise the easiest way will probably be to locate a switch with a lanyard on the lower cowl and wire in parallel with the existing one.

1987 ( and later) models had a kill switch with a safety lanyard

I see thanks. I somewhat suspected that so I messed with it while idling on muffs. It may no longer be functioning as I turned it all the way both directions and experienced no change whatsoever.

Thanks for the info on the kill switch looks like I will be splicing in a universal one.

That is not for adjusting the idle. That is a throttle lock to hold speed while trolling.

You will find that it only limits how far you can reduce the speed.setting of the twist grip.
If you turn it counterclockwise you will be able to reduce the speed by turning the throttle grip to a lower setting.
Turning it clockwise will limit how low you can set the throttle control., In other words increase the idle speed.

As flying Scott says you can use it to fine tune the idle speed for trolling but with the clamp #7 you should be able to adjust the throttle friction so that it stays where you set it.

I dont think I would have figured it out without reading it in the owners manual
