1986 Evinrude 15HP - Installing charging kit

I just got an OMC charging kit (0174037) for my motor and noticed that there is no regulator. It has a stator and a rectifier. I have heard that charging batteries without a regulator can damage them. Does anybody know if i am supposed to have a regulator?

I have no idea about your 86 15hp but my 77 15hp has only the rectifier bolted on the side of the block and it came from the factory like that. It is an electric start model. Someone will chime in on this.
