1986 Evinrude 40 hp running bad

I have a dilema with my motor. It starts up great and throttles fine, but as soon as I put it into the water it does not accelerate. The rpm is really low and I barely move. Also, it doesnt spit out water like it used to. Seems like its a whole slew of something going on....It just happened one day, it always worked fine....any suggestions???

It's one of the three: carb, ignition, or compression. If it ran well previously, you've probably a gunked up carb...possibly your idle circuit or low speed idle screw. Sounds like it's starving for fuel.

ahh...okay that could be it since I did clean the carbs a while ago, maybe I didnt set the screws properly?! I'll check it out in the morning and update!

Lightly seat the low speed needle, then back it out 1 1/2 turns. Find the highest RPMs by backing out 1/16th turn and waiting 'til the motor adjusts. Once you find the highest rpms, back out an additional 1/8 to prevent a lean condition.

The high speed may or may not be fixed???

both jets are fixed jets, no adjustments. have you check spark on both cylinders? have you check compression? if you have spark that jumps 7/16 inch, and compression above 100psi, and with in 10% of each other, you problem is fuel/air delivery. dirty carb jets. the high speed are very easy to clog as the sit in the very bottom of the carb bowl. here is a tutorial about carb cleaning, just happens to be identical carbs. you have to remove the jets to get them clean. tool diagram in tutorial.
