I just bought a Bayliner with an 86 FORCE 125 motor. It was running rough so I have replaced the following. After replacing it is still running pretty rough.(coughing, sometimes backfiring when I start it) Any ideas?

1. Replaced Impeler-Impeller housing and gasket. Also replaced shaft seal on impeller housing. (wasnt getting water pressure or so I thought)

2. Replaced spark plugs.

3. Cleaned carb bowls, there was a little build up in the bowls.

4. I am using premium gasoline 91 Octane.

Any ideas what else I should do. The motor has been sitting for two years IN STORAGE covered and it is running a rough. The seller said the boat was running great 2 years ago. (They are trustworthy friends of a friend.) I havent taken it out to the water yet to see if it will clear out. Is there something else I should try.

Firstboat,
Check the timing on this engine. You will need to make sure that you pull the Plugs out to use the timing light on this (This part took me about a week of racking my brain to see what I was missing). Mine is an 88 and it is supposed to be about 28 Degrees BTDC. I am not sure what yours should be, but somwhere around that im sure. Also try checking the linkage on the little tie rod, coming off of the Timing shaft that attaches to the roler cam on the linkage to the Carbs, when this is all tweaked and in sync it will make a huge difference.

I would recommend purchasing a Clymers manual for this engine if I were you. It is very helpful and will pay for itself in no time.

Thanks,
Bryan Cox

One other thing that made a huge difference on mine was replacing the crappy Spark plug caps that came attached to these cables. I would pull the old ones off, a buddy of mine got me some 90 degree angle ones from his motorcycle shop, and they screw on to the wire. The brand I used are NGK, they are also waterproof, cost me about 5 a piece, but they were worth it. It made it quit missing and the hessitation has died down.

The caps that they originally use have a little metal spring type clip in there, that just touches the wire and then touches the plug, but can have a poor connection at times from what I found. Its just easier to go ahead and replace these.

Thanks,
Bryan Cox
