my motor runs good with the cover off but runs poorly and even stalls with the cover on i replaced the exhaust bellows thinking that might have been it but it still does it.

also i am new to boating so i have a question about the trim. isnt it supposed to be used to to help the boat plane out? are you supposed to use it at full throttle or what throttle setting should i use my trim doesnt work at full throttle (i assume becuase the prop is pushing the motor down) but i just use it to raise the motor to put the transport lock on.

maybe the air intake vent under carbs is plugged up? old wasp nests or something? I'm not sure if the rear handle on top cover is sealed or open on all models. On mine air could enter through back of handle as well as through main intake .... but probably not enough air to do WOT.

Is there an air intake under the carbs somwhere? I just know about the one under the rear engine cover handle. Your trim should be set all the way down to get on plane (or if you could adjust it the cavitation plate on the motor should be perfectly paralell with the bottom) as a starting point. Then at WOT you can trim up some, for more speed. Mine will only go a little, then stop, but it's all that's needed. Temember to bring it back down, if you slow down, and restart.

Check to see if all of the cover insulation is intact, mine was so old and crumbly, I just took it all out, make sure none of it got sucked into the carb

Agreed with above and may also be the exhaust seal, where it mounted to the powerhead. It sounds more like she is starving for oxygen if runs good with cover off and then not good with cover on. Take cover off, check all exhaust area for any leaks, with mine it was the bellow this year. Last year the exhaust seal.

If you have insulation that has the foil on it, it's possiblem that the foil is coming in contact with your wire leads, causing them to short out. I was told to remove my insulation because it would eventually cause problems. Funny how the smallest things can cause the biggest problems.
