i received my chrysler outboard service manual. i cant seem to make any sense about how to time the motor. it seems i need a timing tool and install it in the number 1 cylinder??? the alternate is to pull the flywheel and check the timing with a light off the points. there is no reference at all about the timing marks on the flywheel.
is there a way i can us a static light off the number one, and line that up with the marks on the flywheel???
im so confused.

Because it is difficult to feel top dead center, the timing tool is used to find 36 degrees BEFORE top dead center. It is quite helpful but not necessary and it is not necessary to pull the flywheel either, unless the points need cleaning or adjustin.

With both plugs out: Put a screwdriver into the top plug hole and turn the flywheel by hand slowly until you feel the piston come up to TDC. Rock it back and forth a few times to feel for TDC and to be sure you are at it.

If the block Has a mark, it should match the mark on the flywheel. If it does not have a mark for TDC, then mark it. to match the TDC mark on the flywheel. If neither has a mark, mark both.

Now count the teet on the flywheekl ring gear and divide into 360 (degrees) This is the number of degrees each tooth represents. Facing the engine from the front, count left the number of teeth that adds up to 30 degrees and mark the flywheel.

Now, using a timing light, adjust the timing link until the 30 degree mark lines up with the TDC mark on the block at wide open throttle. If the engine is NOT electronic or magneto ignition, this can be done static by turning the flywheel by hand with the ignition key on. Electronic requires the engine to be cranked over or running.

Did it work? Also I have no spark in the bott coil could the points and timing be the problem or is it the coil? Both coils have cracks in them does that hurt any thing?
