1986 Johnson 25 hp no discharge water

Working fine last week 50° weather. Today 32° and no water. Thermostat stuck close?

The tell tale should show water right after start-up.----Thermostat is not involved with tell tale.----Tell tale is plugged.----Or not enough water in your test bucket.----Or needs new impeller if it has not been done for 5 years.

New impeller. Had low water pressure from garden hose on rabbit ears. If water always flows..then what's the purpose of the thermostat.

Muffs not a valid test. Bucket or lake to test waterpump function.

You need to learn that the water from the tell tale does not even circulate through the block or the thermostat !!----It tells you that the water pump is working.----It does NOT INDICATE that motor is cooling properly.

I am I am...I just did a total engine rebuild. First time and learned a lot.. I learned steel bolts in aluminum block for 35 yrs isn't cool. Broke off 10 bolts. Machine shop did all for $125.

If no water flow, the engine would burn itself up in minutes. The t.stat regulates input of cooling water once engine reaches appropriate running temp -- maintains optimal temp.

Muffs don't test the cooling system.

Use a piece of weed whacker line to clear the tell tale. It's a favorite spot for mud daubers.

Thanks to everyone for taking your time to give me input. Low and behold...my impeller was upside down. So it worked temporarily until the impeller spun around the plastic key. And you guys thought you seen it all...lol
