My 1986 25 hp Johnson bendix won't engage. It was working when I sold it and bought it back 2 years later they said it wouldn't start so put another starter on. This won't engage the flywheel. Any ideas?

weak battery gummed up gear assembly poor connections (clean all * connections) bad cable connectors (oxydation inside the crimps)

selenoid internal contact is bad …. try putting 12v directly from the battery +12 v with a jumper cable is ok when jumpering directly then then look for serious voltage/amps drop across the selenoid.

*all = battery post to selenoid selenoid to starter

Hey Crosbyman, I did notice my white/red wire that goes to the small bolt on solenoid was corroded and I had no other fitting so I taped it. I'll replace that fitting and see. Again.thanks. Love this site...

the smaller wire on the selenoid is likely the control wire to activate (energize) the selenoid. It would not cause any weakness in the required volts/amps going to the starter itself.

if corrosion found it way to the small wire I think you surely need to take all the selenoid wiring out clean post and wires
and reconnect

Sorry Crosbyman, I was on here 30 minutes trying to respond. Ok after I cleaned and replaced the connection on the wire that didn't matter, I looked at it again and saw the bendix was spinning because it was too far away from the flywheel. The bendix does not rise up but it is just a 1/4" too far away. I pushed it by hand while hitting the starter and it scraped the flywheel. I have no idea what the people did when they attempted to change the starter. I have a feeling it was not in neutral and they assumed it was a starter. Let me add, even if the bendix kicked up it still would not reach the flywheel. It's a 1981 instead of an 86, sorry. Any thoughts? I didn't see any adjustments to pull the starter closer.

I bet it could be thankfully they left the old one with the boat when I bought it back. I'm taking it to the shop Thursday. It needs a tune up anyway so I'll let them fix it..I hope to.start doing more myself next year.
