Hi guys,

I finally got my rebuilt Johnson 70 J70ELCD back in the water. In the process of adjusting everything I've found it hard to start and keep running at idle. I removed the airbox and noticed while it's running that if you look in the throat of the top carb a small amount of fuel is squirting up from the base of the needle, but it's not doing this on the center or bottom carbs. This may sound stupid, but is it supposed to do this? Does it sound like a leaky needle on the top, or plugged center and lower carbs?

Addionally, when I put it in gear, I have to tap the choke in order to accelerate. Because of this, I'm leaning towards center and lower carbs are plugged, but I figured I'd ask the pros here first.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Umm, nevermind. I found the problem. Both center and lower carbs had lint stuck in the bottom of the main jet. Note: Never use paper towels to wipe out the float bowls.. It looked like several tiny pieces of lint probably got caught on the bowl casting and all bonded together once they were washed off with the fuel.

It still doesn't idle quite right though, still a bit rough, but it now starts just by tapping the key, no choke.
