Hi everyone.
I have a 1986 Johnson 60 outboard that I really don't want to spend any more money at the repair shop on.
The motor turns over and starts; However, shortly after it dies (makes a sort of underwater sound when stopping). I replaced the fuel line and ball, that come from the tank, with no change. I think I could fix the problem, if I knew where to start.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Will it keep running if you keep bumping the primer (pushing key in)?b

Once started, squeeze the primer ball repeatedly. If it stays running, you may have a bad fuel pump.

I went out today, and yes, it does keep running, if I continually push the primer. What does this mean?
Thanks.

It means you have a bad fuel pump. By squeezing the bulb you force fuel into the carbs. Since the fuel pump isn't working it is you doing the job rather than the fuel pump.

OK. If it is, in fact, the fuel pump, how difficult/easy is this to replace? I am fairly handy, but not a mechanic. I successfully replaced the starter, if that gives anyone a clue on my knowledge.

Thanks.

The VRO pumps on this unit are a little more complicated. Technically, this is a simple replacement process. Unhook the old, put in the new. There is an oil bleeding process that must be followed. You may want to put extra oil in the fuel till you know the new pump is working ok. Suggest you get the original- specific manual for your engine, then proceed. This is a good time to check out all the oil and fuel hoses under the cowling for potential cracks, leaks.
