Hi there,

I have an 86 Johnson 20hp I bought last summer. Runs great all the time, but is most times really hard to start cold - in fact sometimes won't start at all. Once it starts it will run great and start 1st pull all day.

One peculiar reoccuring event is that it will sometimes start cold with realative ease and run for about 5-10 seconds and then die suddenly. In every case, that motor will not start after that for at least 4 hours or about.

It's getting fuel, bulbs firm, etc, etc. Plugs looks they have been burning pretty clean, no crud and not running hot. I know it's getting fuel as sometimes when it won't start I'll pull the plugs and they're soaked.

I noticed that one coil looks like an aftermarket, the other looks older and the middle part is loose in the metal square it's encased in. The newer coil doesn't do this. (I can rattle it around with my finger)

I know a coil is only $55, but before I start arbitarily throwing money at this thing I thought maybe I would solict some advice or opinions from some experts.

Thanks!
