Hi there,

I have an 86 Johnson 20hp I bought last summer. Runs great all the time, but is most times really hard to start cold - in fact sometimes won't start at all. Once it starts it will run great and start 1st pull all day.

One peculiar reoccuring event is that it will sometimes start cold with realative ease and run for about 5-10 seconds and then die suddenly. In every case, that motor will not start after that for at least 4 hours or about.

It's getting fuel, bulbs firm, etc, etc. Plugs looks they have been burning pretty clean, no crud and not running hot. I know it's getting fuel as sometimes when it won't start I'll pull the plugs and they're soaked.

I noticed that one coil looks like an aftermarket, the other looks older and the middle part is loose in the metal square it's encased in. The newer coil doesn't do this. (I can rattle it around with my finger)

I know a coil is only $55, but before I start arbitarily throwing money at this thing I thought maybe I would solict some advice or opinions from some experts.

Thanks!

Hi Otter
Could you please post the model# of your unit. We need to determine the type of systems your motor uses.

OK - the model # is J20CRCNB. Good grief, does that mean it's an 82 and not an 86?

I also noticed that the coil that looks original has a considerable amount of crusty white build-up in around the middle area where the metal case runs through it. Additionaly, the after-market looking coil (looks more like a sealed unit) has a coffee with cream coloured 'liquid' that looks like it ran starting where the coil mounts to the block down to the next coil. I say liquid because it must have been in liquid form at one point for it to run, but now is hard and does not rub off when I touch it. (it's -30 here though, so maybe it's just frozen)

Thanks again

Hi Otter
Yes, that means you have a 1982 model. From your description it sounds like you do need to replace the other coil. This probably is not the total problem though. I suspect your fuel system needs servicing with special atten. to the carb float adjustment. Also check the choke function. Did you have this unit serviced at all when you bought a year ago? If not may I suggest that you take a trip to your public library and see if they have a copy of a manual that covers your model. You probably need to perform several tasks on this rascal. Now is a good time to do it if you have a heated shop.

Thanks very much for the advice. I take it that the coil that I should look at replacing is the older 'loose' coil?

I have a friend with a heated garage, we'll be working on it over the weekend.

Thanks again.

It seems (in my opinion) that the smaller motors rely more on the choke or primer to start than larger motors. Make sure your choke is very tight on the carb and that you fully close the choke when starting. I think the small motors have a hard time getting fuel into the cylinders when initially starting. Must be the weak fuel pump.
