Ok I bought the motor yesterday its super clean looks brand new guy said he tuned it up about 4 years ago and it hasnt been crunk since.. I checked for spark and its hot blue.. cleaned the carb and it seemed spotless before I did but its not getting fuel? I squirted fuel directly into carb and it started but shut off after about 3 sec. Where is the fuel pump? I see a diaphram on the side of the carb is this it? I dont understand and would a new diaphram make it deliver fuel?

Yes, the diaphragm on the side housing is the fuel pump.

A dried, stiff, diaphragm may need replacement, the little flapper check valve must seat and be resilient.

Have your model and serial #'s handy, search iBoats or mercruiserparts for carb parts for your model.

I figured it out.. the float inlet needle was stuck and keeping it sealed so no fuel was getting into the bowl.. I cleaned it put it back and it fired right up

Re: 1986 mariner 20 hp help

All the Mercs I ever had or saw used a rotating shift mechanism rather than a lever that moved up and down as OMC uses.

Therefore there is nothing to disconnect.

Drop your lower unit in the normal fasion and when you get it out you will see the shift shaft with the splined end right at the front of the lower unit. It (the shift shaft) ROTATES a cam follower in the lower unit that follows a 3 detent cam for your 3 gears. Pay attention to where it is positioned F-N-R when you take it out and return it in the same position insuring that the position of your shift lever corresponds. As I recall you put the shift lever in F for the removal so that when you reassemble, you can use the prop to "wiggle" the splined drive shaft tip and get it to seat in the bottom of the crankshaft.

The shift shaft can be rotated with a pair of vise grips easily...don't force anything. Usually it is more convenient to put it in N for replacement of the impeller. Then when finished return it to the F position.

You need to look under the port side of the carb there is a screw to remove and separate the shift rod at the top, on some there is also a screw to remove the reverse lock actuator

Most likely under the carb. Take the screw out and slide the cap off the top of the shift rod. Unbolt the lower unit and thats it. The shift rod shifts up and down, not a rotating shift rod.

Shame on me. I forgot about that clamp on those little guys. Sorry for the disinformation.
