I have a 1986 Mariner 60Hp, When I put it in the water (running) no water comes out of the the hose on the head(I dont no the tect name.)I run the rpms up and it starts to pump water out. I can run all day @ 4100 rmps with no problem. Or idle around in canals, no problem. But as soon as I push the rmps over 4500, the hot horn comes on real low sounding. I back down the rpms to 2000 and it resets.I had the foot of about 6 mounths ago and looked at the water pump, it looked good. I was told it may be the thermostat.I did not even know I had a thermostat. Can this be true? And if so, were is it located? Can any one help me?

Welcome to iboats, Firewalker.
It does have a thermostat. It should be located on the upper part of the head, under a cap held in place with two or three screws.
Just buy a new one,as they only cost about 9 buks. And when they fail closed, your engine is junk. And don't be tempted to remove it and leave it out. It is used to equalize heat within the egine. You should run it 5 or 10 minutes removed just to flush out the block. but do install a new one,so you don't warp or crack the heads or block.

12Footer
I looked that motor over and can't find a place were the thermostat could be located. I traced the
pee-hole line back to were it connected to the head. Its a solf black rubber line connected to a hard plastic male nipple at the head. The male nipple sets on the top/rear section of the motor. I used a air hose to blow into this connection, and hear air exhausting with in the foot area. (As best I can tell)I'm unsure were the air is exhausting. I placed the ears on the lower unit without starting the engine, charge the hose. No water came out of the pee-hole. I started the motor, no water. I run the rpms up and water started coming out. I can put my finger over the hole, and stop the flow of water. Im at a lost, but ordered a manual. Looks like I will need it. If you have any more advise, I take it. If not again thank for what you have.

Take care

your t-stat should be under a cover where that black hose goes onto. If you find it, put it in a pot of water, turn on the heat, and watch it open. Then pull it out and watch it close. If bad, replace it.
Even if the impleller looks good, replace it if it is over 1 year old. It (the impleller) can, and does, get "flimsy" with age , diminishing water pump power therefore causing overheating. A good "set of the pants" trick would be to touch the head when the overheat horn goes off. Scaulding hot? or around 140 degrees?
Good luck :)

firewalker. there is NO thermostat or poppet valve/pressure regulator on your motor...you need to put a new pump in, regardless what it looks like...any future troubleshooting you do will be with the assumption you have a good supply of water, so do this first.
