1986 Merc 9.9 question - idle, idle mix and putting in gear

I just bought a 9.9 mercury two stroke that's from 1986. New non-ethanol gas and quality oil. It runs, but the idle was kind of low on it, low enough that it could go dead. As the engine warmed up, it seemed to idle slower. I found the idle screw and screwing it all the way in really didn't have an effect because it wasn't pushing the bar out any more than when it was screwed in. So I researched and watched videos and they talked about the "mixture idle screw". There was supposed to be one for air (on air side) and one for fuel (on the cylinder side). I didn't see the one for fuel, so I adjusted the air side.

Sure enough, it brought the RPM's up enough that I could actually adjust the idle screw to tone it down. I had let the engine idle for roughly 10 minutes by now. It is submerged in water and it's ejecting water just fine. When warm, the water coming out is warm shower warm. It has a tiller handle and I switched it into forward and it was kind of slow to catch into gear and I couldn't get it to switch into reverse at all. It would just rev up the engine. I could reach down and push/pull the rod above the foot and change it into gear manually though. Before I made this change, I could switch it into either gear fine. So could it be because I adjusted this screw, or could it be that when it warms up enough that that can affect the shifting ability? In the picture I've enclosed, the screw I adjusted is the gold one I have circled.

Any advice is appreciated, I'm trying to learn how to get the motor running good. I can't find any engine specific guides. I tried searching the forums. On Mercury's site, I even found the parts finder. It doesn't say what it is, just gives a replacement number.

I did similar tuning on my Mercury 7.5 hp, which is basically the same engine. Nice utility engines BTW, IMO. As I recall, the thing to do is adjust the idle mixture screw so that the engine won't stall when putting it in gear.

I think you can Google and find some more info on adjusting the carburetor, but my recollection is that it was just one thing to adjust. I'd also run a concentrated mix of carburetor cleaner for a few gallons of gas to really clean the carb.

I also found that the engine is hard to shift into gear, especially reverse. Changing the lower unit fluid may help.

The 7.5 has nothing in common with a 9.9, it has a lot in common with t he 9.8 hp. There is only one adjustment screw on that carb right in the front. Get a factory manual you need to start with a link and sync. Did you adjust the correct idle screw on the side of the motor. It is the one up by the recoil it is a straight screw with no head. You also need to make sure the primer knob is turned all way to the left for the link and sync, and pushed in all the way. Is the wire connected from the carb to the stator.

Thanks a lot. I have the grease already and waiting on the pump to change the lower unit grease. Never heard of a link n sync, will have to google that. I can't find much of anything particular to this motor online other than part number manual. I'll look for a factory manual. The idle screw, looking at the back of the motor where the carb faces you, I adjusted the screw on the left that hast a phillips head. It's connected to this longer piece of plastic that when pulled back increases the rev of the motor. It's above the thing that flips up when you open the throttle. The wire connected from carb to stator, not sure about that. The engine runs good. Took it out on the river yesterday and it went around for 15 minutes in forward fine. Got it back near the dock and tried to put it in neutral and it was still a no go. I'll check the things you mentioned, thanks!

Take a pic of the side of the motor with the cables. I do not believe the idle screw has a phillips head.
