I bought a new to me boat early last summer that had a 1986 90hp Merc outboard on it.
The motor was not running at the time.
Checked compression. - Good.
New plugs, new plug wires.
2 new power packs and a new stator and it was running.
Worked fairly well.
Only 2 issues were:
-doesn't idle that well, will stall if idled for more than 30 seconds. Idle speed set at 900 rpm.
-hole shot has never been very good. Minor stumble present most of the time.
Over the winter I had a new aluminum fuel tank made for it.
I installed the new tank, with all new hoses.
First few trips this year were good. Everything worked well other than same 2 issues noted above.
Last weekend went to take the boat out and I have new issues. These both appeared at the same time, I don't know if they are related.
The tach no longer works at low RPM. Anything under approximately 2500 it reads 0.
Once the boat rev's above 2500, the tach appears tow work properly.
When you slow down below that point, the tach drops back to 0.
The minor stumble at the hole shot has become major.
Most of the time it now stalls when put in gear. If you are really careful feathering the throttle you can get it to rev up. Once it rev's above 2k it will run to WOT with no issues and as much power as ever.
The motor starts easy. Idles as well as it ever has while in neutral.
Runs OK in reverse. Stumbles when put in forward.
It sure ruined out day of tubing.
What I have done:
- Checked the plugs. All plugs are clean, dry and appear to have been firing properly. No buildup of any kind.
- Checked the stator with an Ohm meter per the manual. All good.
- Checked the trigger with an Ohm meter per the manual. All good.
- Replaced fuel filter again. No difference.
What I plan to do:
- Check charging voltage when motor is running. I ran out of time. I want to put it in a barrel, not just muffs.
I am also thinking that I may need to open the idle jets some.
I am looking for some thoughts from more experienced people for other things to try.
Thanks.
