Okay, took on a project that im regretting more and more. Buddy called up about a week ago saying he bought his first boat and asked if i could look it over. The P/O stated that it ran great last season and all it needed was a new gasket for the water pump..
Quick google search shows that likely the cam has worn a grove in it and that engine removal is the correct way to fix this issue. Im looking at a post indicating that i can with enough room pull the assembly out with the engine in the boat and thats honestly my goal.
Figured id come on here asking for any tips or pointers, and if the cam has a groove in it, do i just double seal the water pump or replace the cam? Looking at long term repair, not just a bandaid fix.
Then on a second note,
Fired right up with a little ether, ran for about a minute or two then shut down and i couldnt get it restarted. Had spark, fuel, and sounds like its got plenty of compression, but thats my next check.. just looking to see if any common issues for this that anyone knows of.
I told him to just sell the boat as is, but hes not the brightest and still thinks he got a screaming deal at $1750.. From what im seeing the 470 is nothing short of a nightmare engine. Coupled to a prealpha merc drive..
