1986 murcury 60hp only starts and runs in high idle.

My boat engine will only start and run in high idle if moved below 50% throtle engine stops like you turned the key. Mechanic did an oil leak down test and said #3 cylinder leaks like a stuck pig. Is there anything I can do to repair or is the motor scrap?

Post the actual compression values on this motor.----Was water pump maintained ?-----Mixed gas and oil at 50:1 in the tank ?-----If you can repair it yourself it is worthwhile.----If you have to pay $2.00 / minute at a shop it will be expensive.-----You might even have trouble finding a shop to do this kind of work.

The mechanic didn't do a compression test he did an oil leak down test. I've got a guy in town that will work on it for $90 an hour. Gas mix was fresh last season, water pump has never been touched since I've had it. What needs to be done to fix the cylinder? Mechanic told me to get a new power head or get a new motor
