My new (1986) boat has a 3.0 Cobra drive in it, and the trim gauge always reads full up, regardless of drive position. I've got a manual on order, but I have the time to work on it this week, and was wondering if there are any common causes of this problem or things that i could check. Any help would be appreciated.<br />John

VMAX....most likely it's your sending unit down under the water, it's really like a rheostat that changes resistance to feed the guage, either yours has a broken arm or they do leak after a while and become corroded inside. They are a bit of a pain to change, boat has to be out of the water, the new one comes with a 2 wire harness and a rubber grommet that goes through the transom mounting to seal the wires and connects around the back of the engine.

1992 OMC 4.3 Trim Sending Unit?

1992 OMC 4.3 Trim Sending Unit?

I am ahving a similar issue. I have a '92 OMC 4.3 adn was having problems with it leaning to the left at high speed. We were advised to remove the "whale-tail" and see if that worked. I was very unhappy with the performance after removing it.

The issue is that we removed the "whale-tail" while lounging in the cove. had no issues removing it and reinstalled it in the water after trying it out without the tale. BUT the trim guage never worked right again. it jumps all over the place.

Now that it is out of the water I have inspected the lower unit and found what I believe to be the trim position sending unit and it feels like there is a screw hole in the tip of the "arm"

Is it possible that when i removed the "whale-tale" that a cable came off of the arm? is there something that connects the lower unit to the sending unit or what?

confused

Thanks in advance!

The sending unit on Cobra's is attached to the pivot housing on the startboard side, it is adjustable you'll see two little 5/16 hex heads, loosen them and you'll be able to pivot the sender, the sender arm will not contact the drive at all beyond trim range.

Look at my thread recently I have pics of where the sender is. It's easy to get to. You jut turn the drive to the port side and it's right there.

My sanders wires were corroded to nothing. They're about $100 online. I'm try to see if an Evinrude one will work.
