Try too make a short story...bought this boat that sat for a couple of years, took the carbs off to clean and inspect....floats were off by quite a bit not too mention the pilot screws as well. So I think okay someobody has been tinkering with it. I check the timing plate, its spot on......ignition timing full advance is spot on...ignition timing full retard is off. It looked like somebody had messed with the screw. Before I adjust it, and the manual says nothing about it, I put a light on it and its reading 6 degrees atdc. So I go by the manual and adjust it too spec. Check it with the light and its about 2 atdc. By the manual its spot on, but I had to go and use the light on it. Can you use a light on it and is their are a proper way to use the light?....or should I forget about it because it is running real good and I went by the manual.

Re: 1986 ProV 150 timing

years ago Yamaha offered both a static setting and a dynamic setting.
only use the static when its impossible to use the dynamic.
timing, engine running at dead idle is 7*ATDC +or- 1*, pick up timing, the point where the throttle cam contacts the roller is 6*atdc +or-1*. wot is 28*BTDC and can ONLY be done with a test wheel or the boat in the water unrestrained and the engine in its operating range.means loaded.

Re: 1986 ProV 150 timing

I'm not going to mess with wot full advance, I don't have a test wheel and by the static method its right on.

Those numbers are the same as my manual using the static method. Are their different numbers using the light? My only concern is the idle and pickup on it.

I guess what I'm asking is can I use those numbers and put a light on it and time it?

Re: 1986 ProV 150 timing

my concern is dynamic at WOT, thats when pistons pop.
if it idles and accelerates ok I aint gonna sweat a few degrees at idle or pickup.
WOT is where if its over advanced pistons can pop.
static to me is a starting point dynamic is how I finnish it.
