I am totally new to boat steering systems. My '86 Sea Ray 197 Monaco needs to get the steering wheel off of her so I can do some dash/helm repair (and maybe a spacer, my arms are 2-3 inches too short, lol).
So, like a car I removed the center cap. I see where there are 3 bolts to botlt the wheel to the hub and 1 BOLT in the center. So when I try to loosten the center BOLT I see that it turns everything, including the threaded shaft (cotter pinned) under the dash. I stopped because I'm not sure what is there. The assembly under the dash, I assume is a rack type setup, looks like a rectangle aluminum square tube running side to side.
How can I get this wheel off safety without having to mess something up?
