Hi, I went out to take a ride the other day and broke down and had to be towed back in. I found that the upper Drive gear and driven went from me not checking the gear oil. My fault for sure and this will never happen again! My question is this, Does the upper unit take gear oil from the lower unit or are they separate,..meaning the upper takes gear oil and the lower takes gear oil. When I removed the upper and lower unit, I found no gear oil in the upper and a white milky gear oil in the lower. Any help would be great and thank you!

Not sure what unit you have merc, omc? I had a merc and it fills from the bottom now I am running a 86 omc (cobra) now and it fills from the middle plug. If you have milky looking oil in any thing you have a leak somewhere.

I'm sorry it's an Alpha drive. I only see one plug on the lower unit and one on the upper on the port side. I just can't see how the gear oil gets to the top end from the bottom end.
Thank you!

Look in your (merc) manual and it will tell you. Not sure with the merc but on my unit there is a hole that runs thru the shaft going from lower to upper case.
