I just picked up a 22foot center console with a 1986 dt 200. the motor had some problems staying at idle. I got it to idle but at a very high rpm. somewhere around 1200. I took it for a test drive and at wot it would only reach 3000 rpm. but in neutral it rev all the way to 5500. any thoughts?

im not sure. but ill try and find out. I was thinking that, but the motor is also running very rough. I dont think its running on all six cylinders. in order for it to stay running at idle the rpms are at 1600! (i made a mistake in my post) any lower and it would stall. So i believe this is a problem with the motor not the prop. But with my luck it could be both..lol..at wot the tack stay steady at 3000. It seems as if the rev limiter is holding it back or something.

 i had the same problem and it was the oil filter switch. on the port side of the motor below the oil tank is a small inline filter and if it is clogging up on you, then it trips a switch in the filter, which in turn limits rpms to keep you from burning the motor up.i took mine off and cleaned it out with alcohol and put it back i and it ran fine. it is hard to get to and it is easier to take the oil tank off so you can get to it. be sure to not get air in the line going into the oil pump or you will have to crack the purge valve and apply some air pressure to get the air out. kind of like bleeding your brakes. not too much pressure or you will bust the plastic tank.
good luck,
radar;)

You may be loosing power to at least one cylinder due to dirty carbs. Best not to continue running it since a plugged carb jet can cause a very lean mixture and burn a piston. Remove and inspect spark plugs for possible indication of issues. An idle of 1200RPM's is hard on lower unit while engaging forward/reverse.
