I am in need of a block for a Mercury 1987 115 hp Inline-6 engine. The cylinder wall has been damaged too much to be fixed. Does anyone know what year range of block will work for this as a direct match? Does anyone have any leads of a good place to buy one? Any help would be very appreciated.

Re: 1987 115 I6 block

I have been doing some research and have found it is the exact same powerhead kit from Sierra that fits a 1980 through 1989 inline motor from 90 hp to 150 hp.

Does that mean a 150 hp powerhead from those years will bolt up the the mid section of my 115 hp? Please help!!!

The answer is sorta. The last Merc 1500 was 1977 and was a disributor ignition model. The block should bolt up, but you would need the distributor as well. There may be differences in the exhaust extension. I really am not sure.

I think you should stick with the 1979-1988 ADI ignition 115HP blocks. ADI is still used today and is pretty reliable. iBoats can arrange for a rebuild block for you.

yup... look for a 1983 to 1988 115 high output ADI which would be the same as what you have. Any older, and you'll be disappointed with the lack of power (crank rated versus prop rated).

Hook up with iboats, or try Wayne at Hartwell for an exchange.

Hi,

Chris is right. Stick with what you have.
The port timing is different on the 90, 115, and 140/150 blocks.
If you use a different block you will have to change the carbs
and maybe your end caps. It is usually not worth the trouble.
