is this type of milage normal or could the oil injection being unhooked be a problem . is there any thing i can do to improve the mileage

wide open, you should burn 11-12 gallons per hour. the vro being disconnected should not be the problem.

Fuel economy (or lack of it) comes as a big surprise to many new/first time boat owners. One needs to remember that pushing a boat through the water takes a great deal more power than propelling your auto down a highway. To prove a point, place your outstretched hand so your thumb is facing upward. Now swing your arm back and forth. Now do the same exercise in a tub of water, lake or swimming pool. You quickly find out what forces water places on a boat. It takes certain amount of fuel to make a given amount of HP and the technology (two stroke, four stroke, carbed or EFI) really doesn't matter. An engine on a boat will burn about 10% of its horsepower rating per hour at wide open throttle. The actual number depends on the size of the boat, type of hull, the load it carries, etc. Modern technology applied to outboards, such as direct injection on two strokes and use of more four stroke engines certainly helps fuel economy, but the gains come primarily at part throttle. Disabling the oil injection has little or nothing to do with fuel economy.
