I HAVE AN INTEMITTENT PROBLEM WITH THE DOWN TRIM UP WRKS FINE. I REPLACED THE DN SOLENOID AS THE "HOT" POST WAS LOOSE IN THE SOLENOID.THE SOLENOID WOULD CLICK THOUGH. PROBLEM STILL EXISTS WITH THE NEW SOLENOID. ALL CONNECTIONS/GROUND SEEM SOLID. I AM SUSPECTING THE TOGGLE SWITCH AT THE THROTTLE/SHIFT CONTROL.I'M NOT SURE WHICH CONTROL MODEL IT IS, NOT A SIDE MOUNT. IT HAS THE TRIM/TILT TOGGLE ON THE VERY TOP OF THE LEVER. IS THIS REPLACEABLE? HOW CAN I TEST IT FOR SURE? WHERE CAN I GET ONE, CANT FIND IT AT MERCURY EXPRESS PARTS.

THANKS KCLOST.
I THINK I MAY HAVE BIGGER PROBS NOW. I WAS JUST OUT THERE LOOKING AT IT. I GOT TO THE SWITCH, FUMBLED WITH IT, NOW IT TRIMS UP AND DOWN WITH A BIG GRINDING NOISE. NOW THINK IT MAY BE THE TRIM MOTOR. DOES THIS MAKE ANY SENSE?. ONE MOTOR DOES BOTH UP AND DOWN RIGHT?. IF THERE WAS A DEAD SPOT IN THE MOTOR BEFORE WOULD IT WORK ONE WAY AND NOT THE OTHER? ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Re: 1987 150 BLACK MAX TRIM /TILT

I just had to replace one of my trim motors at $200 for the unit. My problem was that the outside housing rusted through allowing water to get inside.

I had to repair the other trim motor a couple of years ago because the wires had become exposed due to the insulation cracking and corrosion setting in. The symptoms in this case were the same as yours (except I heard no grinding noise). The motor just wouldn't work properly - sometimes in one direction, sometimes in the other until finally, it quit working at all.

I removed the trim motor, took it apart, and cleaned inside. I replaced the wires with a heavier gauge wire from an old extension cord I had and reinstalled it.

It's worked ever since without a single problem.

The point of this story is that you should be very sure that the motor cannot be repaired before you spend the money to replace it.

Re: 1987 150 BLACK MAX TRIM /TILT

UPDATE... THE TRIM/TILT WORKS UP AND DOWN NOW. TURNS OUT THE LEADS FROM THE TILT MOTOR WERE ON THE WRONG SOLENOIDS. I WAS CHECKING/REPLACED THE UP SOLENOID. CORRECTED THE WIRING,TURNED THE SWITCH AROUND AND CLEANED/TIGHTENED ALL CONNECTIONS ON BOTH SOLENOIDS.... STILL ONE PROBLEM THOUGH, THE TILT MOTOR IS STILL GRINDING AWAY AND SEEMS TO HEAT UP PRETTY QUICK. ALSO, I BLEED AND TOPPED OFF THE HYDRAULIC RESEVIOR AS IT WAS LOW HOPING THAT WOULD CURE THE GRINDING NOISE. IS R&R OF THE TILT MOTOR A HUGE DEAL. MY SELOC MAN MAKES IT SEEM SO? ANY TIPS/TRICKS OUT THERE?

I'll be honest, I don't know...

It's hard to tell what kind of sound you are refering to.... As far as R&R on the tilt motor, I'm at a loss....

But it doesn't sound good, In my opinion in regards to the noise...
Please let us know,,,

And others who have experience with this type of work please sound in....

WELL TODAY IS A NEW DAY.. THE GRINDING NOISE THAT WAS PRESENT IN THE TRIM/TILT MOTOR IS NOW GONE. IT SOUNDS FINE. HOWEVER, NOW IT WON'T TRIM DOWN AGAIN, LIKE THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM. I STILL BELIEVE IT IS A FAULTY TOGGLE TRIM SWITCH IN THE SHIFT/THROTTLE CONTROL. I CAN GET IT OUT. IS THERE AN EASY WAY TO TEST IT? ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET ONE? IT DOESN'T SEEM TO BE A MERC PART.

The test would be: do you hear the relays clicking? If so the switch is good. You can short across the big posts on the relay to bypass it and see if the tilt works, then you know it's the relay. CAUTION it will spark a good amount when you short the posts together, make sure there's no gas in or around the carbs or kabloowy!
