1987 2.3l Ford/OMC Model# 232AMFTC

I just bought a 1987 renken model 1750 with a 2.3l ford/omc engine. The person I bought it from informed me that if I needed engine parts, I should just get parts for a 1962 ford pinto as it is the same engine. I have since realized they didn't make pintos in 1962. So, I am wondering if there is any way to cross reference parts or if there is an equivalent automobile engine?? I just wanted to get spark plugs and wires, but it would be helpful to know a engine type for later down the road...

hey man i have the same exact engine in a glasstream last year i just went to my local auto parts store and had them cross reference the #s on my spark plugs and got some autolite plugs. and i bought some plug wires for a late 70's early 80's model chevy luv 4cyl pickup truck it took some time for me to match up the ends but they are the same i was actually out on the lake when my spark plug wire burned into i had to get towed back to shore then go to the parts store i never even pulled the boat out of the water! oh and you can also find most of the other tune up stuff at oriely's auto parts they have a marine catalog they can order out of. they also carry fuel filters/water seperators and oil filters along with belts and hoses too. hope this helped good luck

NAPA auto parts sell the Sierra line of parts...Don't start just throwing auto parts on that motor.Especially the Dist.cap,Starter and Altenator...
MUST be marine specific!

yeah your right alot of parts are marine specific but as far as spark plugs and wires go there really isn't a difference. he was asking about tune-up parts, oriely's has a marine catalog they order out they also stock few of marine parts. i don't know where you guys live but around here NAPA is extremely expensive on parts. and with things like oil filters and plugs and plug wires you can always save a little money going to an autoparts store rather than a marine store

I appreciate the information. I don't know too much about boats yet, but I'm trying to learn as I go. I hadn't really thought about then fact that the parts maybe different. Probably saved me a lot of trouble. I appreciate both of your tips. Thanks

I've got a Bayliner with the same engine model. I did a tune up last year and I replaced plugs and wires, the breaker points were replaced with a Pertronix Ignitor system and I put a hotter coil on it. I spent about $200 on the whole setup. I got the spark plug number and cross referenced them at the autoparts store (O'rielly's) and got Autolite Platinum plugs. I don't remember the numbers, but if you message me, Ill look them up for you. Also, I would highly recommend getting rid of breaker points for the Pertronix Ignitor. It saves you from replacing breaker points all the time and it is an all around better ignition system. I believe the kit was around a $100. If you go that route, you will also have to make a small circuit so the ESA still functions properly. Its not hard, anyone with a soldering iron and a nearby RadioShack can get it done.
