So we got the boat launched on Friday. She runs like a champ but certainly different than what I was used to. I was used to IOs with power steering. My arms are getting a workout! I did notice a few issues I wanted to run by you guys:

1. The voltmeter is reading 16+ most of the time, regardless of rpm. Sometimes it bounces down to 14 for no apparent reason but then back up. I do not have anything else running and both batteries are new.

2. Judging by sound (I know, not very scientific), and speed (+/- 30 knts), I think only running 3000-4000 rpms but the tach is saying 6000.

3. When I first tested the tilt motor on land it did not want to work. Tapped the housing a few times and it was fine. Yesterday afternoon it again locked up and I can't seem to get it to respond. I do get clicking in the solenoid when I hit the button, though it sounds faint. I am guessing the trim motor is gone. Is there any way to change that in the water or do I have to pull the boat? I'd rather not have to pull it if possible.

The boat is a 21' Hydra Sports with an 87 200 Black Max, 2:1 gear ratio, 23p prop.

Might just be the solenoid for the trim/tilt,....

6000 is a bit high for that motor,....I'd check to make sure the tach is set right,....
Or get a small digital inductance tach to check it with,..I'm sure I Boats sells them,...

sounds like a bad rectifier and/or regulator and trim pump motor.. test for 12 volts on leads from solenoid ta pump motor (big wire) when trim button is pushed.. 2 ta 1 is not tha norm for a 200 but can be a good thing...

Correct, the 2:1 was due to the pulling the lower off a 150 to get the right leg length. It makes for pretty quick planing.

I will have to check to see if I have power to the solenoid, but I'm guessing I do since I did get a click. What I did notice is that there are two wires leading to the motor. Based on the serial number it looks like it should have had three? But it also looks like the two wire motor is about 1/3 the cost, so that's a win in my book.

Teamster, I'll check the tach setting but I know the mechanic who put it in (not me...;)) and he's pretty good.

Could a bad regulator or rectifier (or whichever this motor has) cause the tach to act weird along with the 16v output?

yeah, and you have both.. rec is right above tha switch boxes and reg is top, center of tha block behind tha flywheel....

if its a two wire motor you really need relays instead of soleniods.. shoulda been changed when tha 2 wire motor was added....

Great, thanks!

I'll have to take a look to see what we're working with. Is it possible that relays not being added (if that is the case) is part of the problem? Just wondering exactly how the switch was made with the lower. In other words, Was the 200 powerhead installed on the 150 lower (with trim motor, etc), or was the 150 lower installed onto the 200 powerhead and "frame" for lack of a better term? Does that make sense?

sounds like tha solenoid power head (3 wire) was installed ona later model (2 wire) relay clamp, trim, down housing and gear case... i've never seen a two wire with solenoids, just relays so can't say...

Yes, just confirmed that the was the case, but the relay and harness were moved over, too. Do relays click? If not, maybe I was just hearing the button?

That's my understanding from the mechanic who worked on it. I took it for a run this weekend but had my son with me (3 1/2) so I didn't get to dig into the problem or do any testing. I did double check though, and it is "clicking".

Luckily, the trim stopped working when the boat was trimmed up pretty nice. It takes a second or two longer to get out of the hole than it used to, but still does it without much complaint.

So we have about two months of boating left. Over the winter I am planning a repower. Do I try to fix it now with the motor in the water, or do I just wait?
