recently purchased 1987 225hp VRO johnson twin outboards. Was wandering if anyone knew of these particular year outboards having any trouble of any kind. I think I may investigate on disconecting the vro units because I heard there not reliable. thanks for any insight you may have on these outboards.

I've heard the samew thing. It was a major cause of premature engine failure. I never owned one, but if I did, I'd go back to the old fashoned mixing method.
Otherwise, my brother's keeps blowing boxes.
He just keeps a spare on board,in the event it happens underway. It gets expensive when it does at 80bukz a pop. Some last years, some last 15minutes, identical manufacturer/supplier. Admittedly, there may be an underlying cause for premature module failure, that he hasn't quite nailed-down yet.

They are actually great motors, but would have been far greater if the engineers were allowed to finish it.

------------------
Time to change my tagline

Good motors. If you have any doubts about the oil injection then disconnect them. Otherwise upgrade to the newer oil pumps that are a constant 50:1.
The only other thing I would look at is the flywheel magnets. Reglue all 6 on each flywheel if they haven't been already.
Set them up to turn 5800 to 6000 with an average laod, feed them fresh 87 octane with good oil, use Champion plugs and they will live forever.
Good luck!
