Hey guys,

I'm sorry if this has been covered in another thread, but I was not able to find it. I have a 1987 3.0 Mercruiser with a Medallion A4550 Tach.

1. Does anyone know what it should be set at? The options are 1, 2, 3, 4

2. Is there an easy way to tell if the tach is bad just by symptoms? The tach was reading about 1000 RPM fast at WOT (I'm 99% sure-have not had a chance to put a shop tach on the motor to test yet-just got the boat not long ago and it is put away for the winter. It is a 1987 Four Winns 160 Freedom and the speedo said about 30-32 with an almost full tank of gas, three adults and two kids at WOT with a 14 x 19P prop. The engine didn't sound as though it was reving too high, though my ear is not that well trained.), and the tach stops at 1000 RPM when I shut the motor down. When I turn the key to "on" and back to "off" the tack drops all the way down to zero. It seems to read fairly accurate at idle when I first start the motor.

This may be a bad time to post this as I will not be running the boat till spring, and I have cleaned connections on the coil and will be replacing the alternator (long story), but I just thought I would throw the question out there if someone could tell me for sure that the tach is junk (in which case I will order a new one), it just needs to be set to a different setting, or I should wait till spring so I can properly troubleshoot.

Thanks for reading this ridiculously long post. Any pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1987 3.0 Mercruiser Tach Question

Your engine should idle in the range of 650-700 rpm. and 4200-4600 at WOT (wide open throttle). As for the settings (1,2,3,4) on the tach; I would go online and look it up. They will probably have instructions you can download. So, could be an improper setting, or a bad tach...

There is no point in doing anything until its in the water and connected to a good shop tach. Yours could be just fine. 'nutcase
