I HAVE A 35 hp 1987 Mercury and the steering shaft is very stiff. I have been heating it and it becomes free, but I dont seem to be able to pump any grease out of the top bush (it all goes out the bottom)after it cools down it tightens up again. do I have to disassemble the whole unit or should I perservere with the heat. any help would be very much appreciated.
Skeet***

You probably have 15 years of corrosion built up. Are you sure the grease fitting is allowing grease to enter? You can try to remove the fitting and squit a solvent (kerosene works good) to disolve the sludge but be careful because then it will be very flammable!

If all else fails pull it apart, clean it, polish it with emery cloth, grease it and have fun.

Bob

Hi Skeeta and G'day,
I have a '86 Merc 175 with the exact same problem. Are you running in saltwater?Yes?
The steering shaft that goes through the bracket asemmbly is seizing inside from corrosion. The seals are letting water by and it's wicking it's way up inside. All the grease in the world won't correct this if you can't get the grease in there in the first place.Your problem will get progressively worse over time unless it is taken apart/cleaned/de-rusted and re-installed with new bushings and seals(O-rings).These shafts are made of steel instead of Stainless.Depending upon the corrosion level, you may have to replace the steering shaft also.Another note,It sounds like the wave washer may be missing/bad on the top area you mentioned. This would lead to all the motor weight sitting on that top bracket. Is there any support on the bottom?Another test you can do is when the boat is on the trailer. With motor tilted down, grab the skeg and try to pull it towards you.If there is ANY play in there the before mentioned is your problem. ;)

Hi Bob_VT, and Reel apeal,
Thank you for your replies they are both very much appreciated. I have applied heat about 3 or 4 times now and have managed to get the top bush a little more free but still too tight . I had a machinist today suggest I drill through the outer hoiusing into the bush and shaft if I have too and tap a thread and fit grease nipple or two if necessary and pump greas directly into the bush area. the idea sounds reasonable to me.
Skeeta
