1987 4.3 OMC Reverse only out of Water??

I have A 1987 4.3l OMC Cobra drive, that will not go in to reverse in the lake,
We get forward no problem everytime. We also can get reverse out of the water with the muffs on? The Esa seems to be working Idel drops and goes in to gear out of water? Just Not in the water? Please help!

Working on boat last night found the drive bellow have cracks and need to replace so I Will have to pull out drive tonight if part avaible? local. If not will order here. any help

If the shift cable hasn't been replaced lately, that might be the problem, while you have the drive off...

Your transom (lower) shift cable may be worn out. Check the color of the casing on the cable. If it's black, replace it when you remove your lower unit as these were known to have problems. If it's red, check to make sure that it mves freely. Hope this helps.
