1987 60 hp Johnson starting problem

My 87 johnson outboard will on occausion not start.when it does not start right away it is not getting any spark. If you wait 10-20 min it will then start right up. Run fine with no issues. It may start fine for the next 10 to 15 times I go out, but then do it again. Any Ideas?? It has done this for over 3 years now. My local mechanic has checked it out, but of course it was starting fine when he took it out. I hope maybe someone else who has had this happen to them could help me.

when you say will not start, can mean a lot of things. the starter will not turn the engine over. the starter turns engine, but engine does not start. clarify.
