hello everyone, i have a problem with my 1987 85 hp force model 856x7a , it wont strat when handle set on idle , i have to accelerate on neutral to start and when deccelerate back to idle (about 1/4 inch back to idle) it cuts off. took it to the lake yesterday i got it on gear (had to do it quick) when running full throttle it has half pulling power then it had before when i used it. ***boat was last used on 4th of july weekend***ran great. it sat until last weekend when i tried to start it. will not start , bought a new battery, drain old fuel, put fresh fuel, cleaned/blow it out fuel pump it did not look too bad. after doing all this it cranked right up but only if i keep handle off the idle neutral position, any suggestions? i appreciate it.

If it ran great before you put it away, then I would suspect either fouled plugs or varnished carbs.

When you start it, do you pull the trottle out and advance it? Is it starting and running about 1500 RPM in this postition?

I just ran into this same issue...check both ends of your plug wires, plugs, and coils, if they all look good then check for spark.

Re: found the problem

thanks for your replies guys, thats what i was thinking , carbs or fuel pump issue, found out it was running on 2 cylinders, #3 cylinder has no spark (bad ignition coil)

That'll do it. You can get them on iboats or ebay.
