Hi all me again. This is what happened. Started the boat for the 1st time a few weeks ago with earmuffs on it. She ran pretty good for about 10 mins and the buzzer went off, so I shut her down. Well then she wouldnt turn over or anything. Brand new starter and battery checked out to be ok. Well the starter solenoid wasn't clicking and it turned out to be cracked so I replaced it yesterday and she started turning over again. Wel that lasted about 5 or 6 turns and now she isnt turning over again. Any ideas i am lost now. Oh and the fuses all looked good before yesterday will check them again today. thanks

Re: 1987 85hp Force Starting Issues

Update, It starting turning over again today but it would not start. Pretty sure it is getting fuel. But here is the problem. After about 5 times trying to start it, I heard a loud click noise from the motor and lost power to everything. T/T radio and all lost power. A few minutes later i have power. Then it did the same thing again. Any Ideas?

Update to Update, If I undo my battery and hook it back up after this loud click I get all power back. But it is turning over but not starting. Trying to find a place to get plugs now. They look pretty used

What size battery are you using and is it a cranking battery or a deep cell? When starter spins does it spin at its normal speed or is it running slower then normal? Disconnect the battery cables and put a volt meter on the battery. How many DC volts do you read? Maybe a bad starter solinoid or ignition switch. It could be keeping the small wire on the starter solinoid with 12 volts and battery is so week it is not making the starter move. By disconnecting battery leads you loose power to the solinoid and the circuit opens and battery power goes back up. If battery is reading below 12.3 volts say 12 hours after full charge it needs to be replaced. A fresh battery will hold a charge of around 12.65 Volts 12 hours or even days after it is charged.

I checked the batttery the other day I want to say it was 12.9V. I know its good though. Starter Solinoid is new just put it on there. Just put new plugs in it and still same thing. The battery is prob a little weak right now but was full charge when i started all this. Im charging it again overnight. Starter seems to be spinning fast not sure if the same havent really noticed. The battery is a Deep Cycle 720 cranking, 600 Cold. Same battery size as i used last year, I own 3 of them. Im lost :) with this thing now. Thanks for the help and any help to come.

maybe some wires or crossed and you're tripping the breaker. it's on lower left corner of connection block. maybe something with starter is shorting it out. maybe you accidentally whacked it and it's broken. either way, sounds like an electrical short or circuit breaker to me.

What RRitt said. Do any of the cables get hot?
Seems to be redirecting the flow of current.

Now you mention it I do think the battery cables felt hot but i figured that was from trying to start the boat so much. I will feel around here in a few minutes. Fixing to try to start it again. Thanks

update: I went out trying to start it again on a good battery fully charged and it is just turning over. Dont even act like it wants to start. I got new plugs in it.. Any ideas? It didnt trip again like it had been. Not sure what the deal is there. Also no wires felt hot.. So im not sure

Have you tried jumping current directly from the battery to the starter with jumper cables. If she spins free, then the battery and starter should be good, and the problem lies in the wiring, solenoid, or ground cable.

You might want to put the old plugs back in. They used to start the motor and dont anymore. You may still have a tripped circuit breaker. I dont know on force but on chyrslers it is after the starter and only protects the ignition system.

Re: 1987 85hp Force Starting Issues

on my force, the starter relay circuit gets fed through circuit breaker. If breaker trips then the relay can't kick in.

hmmm .... you could bypass CB by taking a jumper wire straight from battery side of relay and touching it to the yellow wire of the relay coil (small posts on sides that control the relay. if yellow goes hot then starter spins regardless on anything else on boat ... including ignition key and neutral safety). you'd want to unplug all the spark plugs first. it wouldn't be entirely safe for the motor to fire while you were doing this. but it might make a good way to narrow down the list of possible suspects.
