1987 90 hp johnson vr4 tachometer

i need some help if anyone could give me some input would be greatly appreciated. i am hooking up a faria 7000 rpm tach. not sure wich wires to use and what position to set it in on.here are a couple pics of the 2 wires i have at the shifter one is pink maybe faded with silver wire in it and 1 is red with copper wire in it. when i turn the key on the pink wire is always hot and the red wire is not. i started the motor tryin to get a pulse out of both of them with a test light but got nothin flashing on my test light. im lost thanks dave.

Your control unit should have a three pin plug. If you get the mating connector and harness from a BRP dealer (assuming you don't already have it), there are grey (pulse), black (grd) and purple (switched 12VDC for instr lights). See below:
