Hi Guys,

Bought a boat this past summer (had a couple posts up back then) and I know there will be a "few" fixes I need to do on the boat due to age (and tell tale signs).

I have read the forum quite extensively and am excited to get my project up here and get your advice. Before I get to the engine I want to make sure the boat itself is solid and not fixed with some half-a**ed band-aid fixes.

The casting deck in front and back are build new, this should have been my first warning sign... and floor in the middle is soft, not a very big patch, but I will assume the worst, i.e. entire floor is coming up and everything is getting done new.

The transom seems solid but again I would also like to test that especially if I find any issues with the stringers, etc.

My question is this: what is the best way to kick this project off, what will I need, and what do you need to see pictures of to help me along? The boat is at my parents place but I am going back for Christmas and would like to get the "diagnostics" done then. Pictures will be posted as well.

Thanks in advance guys, very much appreciate it.

A few other questions I have wondered about are:

1) what happens to the center consoles when I take the floor out/ how to I replace the floor under them?

2) Will the boat lose its form if I cut out the floor/decks? Will I need some kind of frame or can I just get this done on the trailer?

The best thing to do is start reading all the other posts on this subject, it will give you a very good idea of what will need to be done. Take pics of everything you want people to comment on, it makes it much easier to give answers.

Hi, I will be going to my parents place for 10 days over the holidays and would like to get a jump start on this.

1) is it feasible/ a good idea to take out all the deck/stringers... etc? If I do would I have to build a frame for the thing or could I leave it on the trailer and not worry about it until spring/summer?

2) What tools do I need to actually take out the deck? Is there anything that people can recommend in terms of saws, etc?

You can make a "cradle" for your boat to support the hull while the deck and stringers are out, or you can add additional support to your boat on the trailer. The trailer by itself isn't enough support. You need to make the cradle or add the reinforcement to the trailer before you remove the deck and stringers.

Tools: You'll mainly need a Skill saw, and an angle grinder... but other power tools can come in handy too, like a reciprocating (sawzall) saw and orbital multi-tool. Of course you'll need a drill or 2, hammers, screw drivers, clamps and other assorted goodies... I also like to keep a couple pounds of C-4 on hand in case I get disgusted with the whole mess, it makes getting rid of everything much easier.

Many thanks jigngrub...

I think I'll probably just add additional support to the trailer. Get some wood in there and prop it up nice (much easier said then done). Do you think I should most definitely take the engine off or can I do the overhaul with the engine on it? Reason I ask is because this restore looks quite thorough and they left the engine on. HOWEVER will I still be able to make sure the transom is good enough?

Thanks

Perfect, thanks.

how heavy are those outboards? Would two people be able to lift that sucker off or are we looking at a crane type device?

Also a very strange question... For some reason across the restore threads I've seen I have never come across this: http://home.comcast.net/~boats615/images/ranger/100_0268.JPG

There is like a 'hole' in the fiberglass floor with a pipe running down it. My boat looks exactly the same... what is it and do I just ignore it?
Also what is in between that fiberglass floor and the bottom of the boat? There are probably a good 3ft from that floor to the bottom...

The "hole" in the deck (floor) is the ski locker, a place for storing water skis.

Below your deck (floor) and above the bottom of the hull is where your stringers and floatation foam are.

Not only will you need to remove the motor (2 guys should be able to lift it off), you'll also need to remove the "cap" on your boat. There's an example of this in post #3 of this thread:
http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...ass-transom-replacement-then-some-503113.html

We really need to see pictures of your boat so we can give you the best help for your particular model.
