I a have a 1987 Bayliner Capri cuddy 19'. Not surprisingly I have discovered various water leaks originating from the top deck at the bow. Places like the the hatch cover, windshield, cleats etc. I noticed that the rubber bumper that runs around the outside edge has been sealed from the underside with silicon yet the top edge is unsealed. It would seem that this would allow water to collect inside and then possibly leak through into the boat. Should this bottom edge be sealed at all?

Nope, not really, if the upper casting is sealed to the hull casting, sealing it is a waste of time, 'n caulkin'....

I agree..

And IF the hull deck joint is not sealed ( as bond-o stated ) then its still a waste of time. You would need to seal the hull deck joint :)

On my Capri I figured out that when I'd hit waves water would splash up under the rub strip and into the cabin. Before I carpeted the interior I sealed the hull/cap joint from the inside. I should take the time to remove the rubstrip and seal it with 4200. As a quick fix I used silly-cone on the bottom edge of the rubstrip...not a proper, professional fix I know but it fixed the problem for the season. Nothing like making it through a small craft advisory and finding the compartments under the cushions holding a couple inches of water, especially when you just gutted the hull and replaced virtually every piece of wood and glass in it

I also had windshield screws leaking (not fun having rain dripping on your face when you're trying to sleep) so I removed all the screws for the windshield, railing, lighting, and deck hardware and resealed it with 4200 or 5200, can't remember which one but either would work fine.

My cuddy also has silly putty under the Joint strip. The windshield also leaked at the mounting. I recommended fix as many as you can locate and then test for more. Love these boats. I know they catch a bad rep but never had mine out without a compliment or an offer to buy it. After all the work she has paid dividends in the fun department. Hope your will as well.
