I have a 1987 Classic 50 45 hp and it will not crank. Near as I can tell it is not firing. Fuse ok. Cranking system working. It was idling and I put it in reverse and it died. Then would not crank after that. Checked to see if safety switch was in the run postion. The red wire to the starter solenoid is hot and it looks like the same wire feeds the rectifier. When checking the fuse the lead was hot.Help!!

Disconnect the black/yellow wire at the switchbox and check again. If you now have spark there is a problem in your kill circuit. i.e. ignition switch, mercury switch, emergency cut off switch.

could the wire be just black instead of black and yellow? I do not see a black and yellow in the wires going from the shifter to the motor.

Look on the switchbox itself. the Black/yellow stripe wire will be on the right hand row of terminals on the switchbox. Any kill switches/mercury switches will be disabled if you disconnect that wire.

I am sorry I am so dumb but please tell me where the switchbox is. I have about 6 diagrams and none show a switchbox

Looking from the back of the motor it will be on the right hand side next to the 4 ignition coils .The box has 8 terminals on the left side and 5 terminals on the right hand side .The kill wire is hooked to the center terminal on the right side. the terminal is labeled BLK/YEL
