I have a 1987 Eveinrude with a rope starter, when I pull to start the engine the rope reciols very slow. If the motor doesn't start on couiple of pulls I take the cover off and manually rewind it.
I took the rope starter off and the coil has greas and seems to have good tension. Is there a way to test the tension, or is it just easier to replace?

And it this coil the only reson it would be slow to rewind?

Jerry

Re: 1987 Evinrude 15 Rope Starter Problem

Jerry sometimes the grease will get old and actually slow down the recoil of the spring. Get some WD-40 or a penetrant and squirt some down inside the recoil spring cup. Pull the rope and see if it will free up after several pulls.

Did you remember to get the washer that sets in the bottom of the cup back in place?
