Newbie here. Just recently bought a 1987 Vision 180 with Evinrude 150 on it (model # E150STLCUR). My problem: Motor cranks and idles fine but 1-3 minutes after getting on plane, motor bogs boat comes off plane but motor never dies. After reving engine or idling for a few minutes, the 1 or more cylinders that were not firing begin to fire and the motor runs fine the rest of the day. This has happened each of the 8-10 times I've taken the boat out except for 2. One time we let it idle for about 10 minutes prior to launch and then had to idle out to the river channel for another 3-5 minutes. Motor ran fine all day. The other time we fished two days in a row and the second day the motor ran fine the first run. We fished a shallow cove with motor tilted all the way up for approx. 2 hours. We then tried to run to another cove and after 1-3 minutes of being on plane, motor bogged and after idling and reving for a few minutes motor ran fine the rest of the day.

After searching previous threads, it seems like I may have one of these problems:
Water in tank: If water in the tank, would it not affect all 3 carbs and kill the engine?
Fuel line leak: Wouldn't this affect the motor all the time and not just on initial run?
Gunk/junk in one of the bowls: Sounds the most logical to me.

Where do I start? Any suggestions?

One other mention, the tach does not work and the battery is not charging. I assume I have a bad reg/retifier. Could this affect my above problem?

Thanx in advance for the help.

water in tank = paddle
fuel line leak you should see if squeezing the bulb
fuel restriction ..plugged filter or lines could be a problem
tach not working could be rect\reg
when motor down in power...squeeze primer bulb try priming system(push in key) try removing plug wires one at a time (use insulated pliers etc.)
Junk in bowls...with front of air box off watch fuel spray from nozzles they should look about the same(of course you will have boat in water and an assistant operating while doing these checks)
Wayne
p.s. don't overlook wrong spark plugs installed (these motors love champion hate others

Don't assume w/o testing. First, test stator output to R/R by measuring AC voltage across the yellows. Should be >25VAC. If not, either wiring is bad or stator is NG. If stator tests OK, then check R/R diodes, which are the active components in the R/R. If diodes are OK, then suspect R/R output wiring. The part of the stator involved in charging and the R/R are not needed to run, so this is a separate issue.

The engine would not make full hp if you had water in the tank. You could have a weak fuel pump-try squeezing the fuel hose primer bulb constantly when the engine won't run right. This will force fuel around the pump, directly into the carbs. See what happens. Take an inductive timing light out the next time you go boating. Check each plugwire when you have running issues. It will show the spark on the plug wires. It will also show weak spark or intermittent spark.

you could also have a plugged up vent to the tank, when the problem happens open the cap a bit to allow air in,if problem goes away, clean or replace the vent,if it continues ,it could be a gunked up fuel pickup tube,or some restriction that is causing carbs to not remain /or get full at high speed when fuel demand is high,if its carbs,it is likely a float not adjusted right or some crap in the carb,if you have any sign of water in the filters ,expect carb trouble

Re: 1987 Evinrude 150 bogs

Finally got a chance to troubleshoot this thing. The problem seem to be to consistant to be a fuel problem so I started with electrical. Fired the engine up and pulled each plug wire one at a time. None of the cylinders on the left side were firing. Thought about switching stator wires to each powerpack but they seemed to short so I swapped sides with the packs. Problem switched to the other side. Ordered a new powerpack today, so I think this problem will be solved.
The tach started working on its own but I did find what looked like arcing from the tach wire to what looked like a purple wire at the terminal block. Taped both wires and hope this problem is fixed as well.
Thanks to all for your help. This is a great site. Hope once I get more experience I'll be able to contribute as well. Thanks again.
