Maybe someone can tell be that the engine isn't shot, just needs tune up or ? My max RPM I can get all of a sudden on the force 85 is about 3000. Any ideas whats putting the limit on this? It sems to be sputtering a little but nother major. Thanks

Re: 1987 Force 85 RPM question

Sure sounds like you are only running on 2 cylinders.

Could be loose spark plug wire
bad coil
bad cd module
bad trigger
no compression on one cylinder
dirty carb not feeding gas
and many more.

Start by examining the plugs, do they all look the same?
Is one extra oily? Or does it look steam cleaned?
check for spark.
Check compression.

You need spark, compression, and fuel in each cylinder for it to run properly.

Keep us posted with what you find, and hopefully we can help you out.

Re: 1987 Force 85 RPM question

Thanks Roscoe for getting info to me. I think I'll take it in and have a pro look at it. I bought this boat used a couple of weeks ago and it seemed to fire up and run good when I looked at it. Now it's running like I mentioned. I'll update when I get it back from the shop.

Re: 1987 Force 85 RPM question

Got the boat back from the pros. RPM problem was as simple as linkage was sticking. Had tune up done, compression check, and new water pump and lube. Boats runs like a champ.
