Hi, My name is danny wheeler. Im new to this forum. I bought a pontoon with a 1987 force 50 hp. model number 507F7C serial 1967.
Im replacing my diaphragm due to primer bulb going soft after a few min. took filter off and fuel pump to find the diaphragm cracked. My question is that I when I took the filter off I looked behind the screen and seen what looked like yellow grease is this susposed to be there or do I need to clean this out. I was thinking about cleaning this out and running a inline fuel filter. any sugestions would be great thanks

Well, Danny, welcome to the forum. If the filter you are talking about is the screen inside the black plastic cap, the it should be crystal clean remove it and clean it. Even though the diaphragm was cracked, a soft primer bulb or a collapsed one indicates that the fuel pump is working and there is a partial clog between the tank and bulb. SO clean out the strainer in the tank and if you have a fuel quick-connect at the tank clean it too--both male and female fittings.

That yellow greasy stuff may indicate varnish inside the tank. If it is portable, empty and clean it. If it is built in use portable tanks while you try some tank cleaner. Best to clean or replace the fuel line also.

Yeah, its a big job and there is never enough time to do it right but always time to do it over. What is a lost day on the water due to fuel problems worth to you?
